Clearing yards in Lanoka Harbor

Lanoka Harbor is the lagoon side of Lacey Township, south of Forked River on the bay.

Housing stock. A split between lagoon-front properties on the water side and post-war homes on the inland side of Route 9, with newer infill between them.

Tree cover. Thin on the lagoon streets, where the lots were dredged and filled and never had a canopy of their own. Heavier on the inland side, where oak and pine were left standing between the houses.

Lanoka Harbor is really two jobs sharing a postcode. On the lagoon side there is very little canopy and the leaf load is almost entirely drift — material blown across flat, open ground from the mainland that then packs against bulkheads, fences and under decks. On the inland side of Route 9 the canopy is the property's own, and the volume is several times higher. A quote given for one side of the highway does not transfer to the other, which catches out crews who price from an address rather than from the yard.

Working here. Lagoon streets are narrow with bulkheads behind the houses, so material is usually carried to the front rather than driven out. The inland side has driveways and room to stage a truck.

Around Lanoka Harbor. The work comes from the lagoon streets off Bayside Drive; the blocks between Route 9 and the water; the older inland streets toward Lacey Road.

On cost here. The lagoon side is small-lot, high-labour work — carrying rather than loading. The inland side is volume work. Both land inside the published band but for opposite reasons.

The bulkhead line is the constraint nobody quotes for: on a lagoon lot the material has to come forward past the house, and there is rarely a side gate wide enough to make that quick.

Lanoka Harbor sits under Lacey Township's collection, which means brown paper bags or a container under 32 gallons — not loose piles. That is the opposite of the rule five minutes north in Ocean Township, and residents who moved within the county are the ones most often caught by it.

Because Lacey collects in cycles rather than on fixed dates, and a cycle takes about two weeks to cross the township, a Lanoka Harbor street can be collected a fortnight apart from an inland Lacey street in the same season.

Leaf removal and yard cleanup need no permit in Lacey Township. What matters locally is the township's curbside collection calendar, which sets when and in what form piles may go out. New Jersey requires contractors performing home improvement work to be registered, and registration is confirmed against the state register before any crew is referred. Insurance is not part of that check, so ask any crew for a current certificate of insurance before work begins.
